Over the last year Dr. Darrick Antell has performed up to three or four chin implants a day, reflecting a national trend that has seen chin augmentations emerge as the fastest growing plastic surgery trend of 2011.

After about a 45-minute outpatient procedure and a bill ranging from $3,500 to $7,500, New York-based Antell’s patients emerge with what he said is a confidence boost: an athletic, youthful look from a more prominent chin.

“People want that leading lady, leading man look,” said Antell, who is also an assistant clinical professor of surgery at Columbia University.

“If you look at people in the limelight, they all have strong chins and it’s a part of the profile that has long been overlooked,” he said.

Chin implants surged by 71 percent in 2011 as more than 20,600 adults went under the knife to sharpen their jaw lines, up from roughly 12,000 the year before, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.

Strong chins are associated with leadership, confidence and honesty, Antell said, not to mention some powerful men and women.

“Romney’s got a great chin,” Antell said of the presidential hopeful. “Obama has a pretty good chin. Bill Clinton has a very… Read the rest

Attempting to banish cellulite has often been a frustrating and pricy dilemma for women, with everything from caffeinated creams to vibrating massages promising to smooth dimples. Now, women are shelling out up to $11,000 for a controversial new laser treatment called Cellulaze – all in the quest to rid their bodies of lumpy, dimpled skin – forever.

Now hundreds of doctors and clinics in the US and UK are offering the high-tech cellulite treatment – with media reports appearing in the New York Times and Today Show in the US, followed by a slew of websites and bloggers.

“Approved by the FDA in January for showing improvement for up to three months, Cellulaze is rapidly become one of the hottest beauty crazes, despite the hefty price, dearth of scientific data, and reports of ugly complications in some patients,” reports Yahoo News on March 4.

The device’s manufacturer suggests that doctors and plastic surgeons charge $7,000 for treating an area the size of a standard sheet of paper. The technique involves using a laser to burn the connective fibers anchoring skin in a dimple shape, while also smoothing out the bulges.

“Cellulaze says that its laser technology attacks all three problems… Read the rest

Well-known plastic surgeon Woffles Wu Tze Liang was on Wednesday charged in a district court over getting an elderly employee to take the rap for him for two speeding offences.

Court papers stated that Wu, 52, had abetted Mr Kuan Yit Wah to provide misleading information to the police on two occasions.

In 2005, Mr Kuan, then 76, allegedly lied to the police that he was the driver of a car caught speeding on Lornie Road at 4pm on Sept 11 that year.

It was going at 95kmh on a road with a 70kmh speed limit.

I regret not having my boobs done: Lisa S

Even after leaving the modeling world behind to pursue a new career in hosting, TV personality Lisa Selesner — Lisa S for short — expressed her regrets about not having enhanced her assets in her younger days.

However, the supermodel wife of Hong Kong movie star Daniel Wu was quick to clarify that it would have been “strictly business”.

“I hate to say this because I don’t want girls to take this the wrong way by any means, but when I look at it from a business point of view, I do kind of regret not having my breasts done,” said Selesner.

“Because when I look back on all the opportunities in the modeling world that I missed because I’m so incredibly flat, I realize I could have made a lot of money,” she explained, but not before adding that she’s already “at an age where I’m really comfortable with my body”.

But surprisingly, Selesner, who is in her early thirties, also said that she is “not averse to doing it in the next ten years.”

“I’m glad I… Read the rest

Here’s a video where a seven year old went for plastic surgery to avoid bullying.

There seems to be so much wide acceptance of many procedures these days that it is difficult to know what really is or is not an acceptable societal norm these days.

The trend to notice is that people are indeed placing greater and greater emphasis on looking good. So how far should this be taken? A haircut is a procedure that makes you look better, plucking brows, applying cosmetic, taking health supplements, wearing braces, contact lenses, LASIK. Where does one draw the line? Makes one think doesn’t it?

So many people these days are openly declaring that they have been ‘under the knife’, to the extent of blogging about it or posting their photos on Youtube.

WASHINGTON — After two days of discussion and testimony about silicone breast implants, a top government health official said he had heard nothing to shake his faith in the safety of the widely used implants.

The official, Dr. William Maisel, chief scientist for the Food and Drug Administration’s Center for Devices, said silicone breast implants were safe.

“We felt that way before the meeting, and we continue to feel that way after the presentations and discussions over the past two days,” Dr. Maisel said.

There are risks to the implants, however, Dr. Maisel said, including ruptures, a hardening of the area around the implants, the need to remove the implants, scarring, pain, infection and asymmetry. “Women should feel assured that the F.D.A. continues to believe that currently marketed silicone breast implants are safe,” he said.

1 in 5 patients under sedation will have respiratory problems
But close monitoring allows appropriate intervention, doctors say

Published on Jan 5, 2012

By Fiona Low

Doctors said about 20 per cent of patients who are under sedation during medical procedures will experience respiratory problems which include airway obstruction.

This could lead to a decrease of oxygen in the bloodstream that could cause brain damage or death.
However, it is rare for death to occur because patients should be monitored when they are under sedation so that appropriate intervention can be applied if needed.

Sedation, administered orally or intravenously, is used to relieve anxiety in patients undergoing medical procedures.

Dr Noelle Lim, a senior consultant in the anaesthesia department at Changi General Hospital, said vital signs measured include the patient’s oxygen saturation, rate of breathing, pulse rate and electrical activity of the heart. Blood pressure should also be measured every three to five minutes.

‘This will allow trained medical personnel to identify potential problems early and intervene appropriately to resolve them,’ she… Read the rest

Liposuction death: Clinic renamed Yume Aesthetic and Medical Clinic

Published on Jan 5, 2012

By Elizabeth Soh

It seemed like business as usual on Wednesday at the clinic where Mr Franklin Heng underwent liposuction shortly before he died.

Now called Yume Aesthetic and Medical Clinic, the private practice is owned and run by Dr Jim Wong and Dr Zhu Xiu Chun.

These are the same two doctors who were involved in the 2009 operation to remove fat from Mr Heng’s back. Then it was called Reves Clinic.

On Wednesday, State Coroner Victor Yeo found that the 44-year-old property firm chief executive was sedated so heavily that he later suffocated.

When The Straits Times visited the clinic in the International Building in Orchard Road, only Dr Zhu’s certificate was displayed prominently.

The 48-year-old, who is also known as Dr Myint Myint Kyi, declined to comment on the findings of the inquiry when approached. She said through her receptionist that she was busy with a patient.

The receptionist also said that Dr Wong, 36, was away and could not… Read the rest
