Here’s a video where a seven year old went for plastic surgery to avoid bullying.
There seems to be so much wide acceptance of many procedures these days that it is difficult to know what really is or is not an acceptable societal norm these days.
The trend to notice is that people are indeed placing greater and greater emphasis on looking good. So how far should this be taken? A haircut is a procedure that makes you look better, plucking brows, applying cosmetic, taking health supplements, wearing braces, contact lenses, LASIK. Where does one draw the line? Makes one think doesn’t it?
So many people these days are openly declaring that they have been ‘under the knife’, to the extent of blogging about it or posting their photos on Youtube.
WASHINGTON — After two days of discussion and testimony about silicone breast implants, a top government health official said he had heard nothing to shake his faith in the safety of the widely used implants.
The official, Dr. William Maisel, chief scientist for the Food and Drug Administration’s Center for Devices, said silicone breast implants were safe.
“We felt that way before the meeting, and we continue to feel that way after the presentations and discussions over the past two days,” Dr. Maisel said.
There are risks to the implants, however, Dr. Maisel said, including ruptures, a hardening of the area around the implants, the need to remove the implants, scarring, pain, infection and asymmetry. “Women should feel assured that the F.D.A. continues to believe that currently marketed silicone breast implants are safe,” he said.

1 in 5 patients under sedation will have respiratory problems
But close monitoring allows appropriate intervention, doctors say
Published on Jan 5, 2012
By Fiona Low
Doctors said about 20 per cent of patients who are under sedation during medical procedures will experience respiratory problems which include airway obstruction.
This could lead to a decrease of oxygen in the bloodstream that could cause brain damage or death.
However, it is rare for death to occur because patients should be monitored when they are under sedation so that appropriate intervention can be applied if needed.
Sedation, administered orally or intravenously, is used to relieve anxiety in patients undergoing medical procedures.
Dr Noelle Lim, a senior consultant in the anaesthesia department at Changi General Hospital, said vital signs measured include the patient’s oxygen saturation, rate of breathing, pulse rate and electrical activity of the heart. Blood pressure should also be measured every three to five minutes.
‘This will allow trained medical personnel to identify potential problems early and intervene appropriately to resolve them,’ she… Read the rest

Liposuction death: Clinic renamed Yume Aesthetic and Medical Clinic
Published on Jan 5, 2012
By Elizabeth Soh
It seemed like business as usual on Wednesday at the clinic where Mr Franklin Heng underwent liposuction shortly before he died.
Now called Yume Aesthetic and Medical Clinic, the private practice is owned and run by Dr Jim Wong and Dr Zhu Xiu Chun.
These are the same two doctors who were involved in the 2009 operation to remove fat from Mr Heng’s back. Then it was called Reves Clinic.
On Wednesday, State Coroner Victor Yeo found that the 44-year-old property firm chief executive was sedated so heavily that he later suffocated.
When The Straits Times visited the clinic in the International Building in Orchard Road, only Dr Zhu’s certificate was displayed prominently.
The 48-year-old, who is also known as Dr Myint Myint Kyi, declined to comment on the findings of the inquiry when approached. She said through her receptionist that she was busy with a patient.
The receptionist also said that Dr Wong, 36, was away and could not… Read the rest

Doctors gave liposuction patient too much sedative: Coroner
Heavily sedated man eventually died from effects of asphyxia
Published on Jan 5, 2012
By Selina Lum
Liposuction patient Franklin Heng suffocated after doctors gave him too much sedative during the operation, a coroner found on Wednesday.
The property management firm boss was meant to have been conscious during the procedure to remove fat from his back and abdomen.
But in fact, he was given such a big dose of propofol – the controversial sedative that killed singer Michael Jackson – that the effect was almost like a general anaesthetic.
He was so heavily sedated, he was unable to protest when Dr Jim Wong, 36, accidentally punctured his intestines 13 times.
When the divorced father of two responded to the pain by struggling and swinging his arms, the doctors failed to realise he was injured and simply sedated him further.
Unable to support his own airway, Mr Heng eventually died from the effects of asphyxia, said State Coroner Victor Yeo.

The Sin Chew Daily reported that a Singaporean chinese businesswoman, paid RMB16000 (about SGD6600) to a beauty salon in Malaysia for rhinoplasty (temporary nose fillers), which left her with nasty infections and unfortunately, disfiguring her!
We would like to stress that it is EXTREMELY dangerous to have medical procedures performed by non medical professionals, as these beauticians are not equipped with the medical knowledge to detect potential problems. More importantly, the practise of proper hygiene in beauty salons may be inadequate.
Do not be penny wise and pound foolish!
